TORONTO (NEWS24) As part of a global strategy to improve the safety of cars and other vehicles, the City of Toronto is opening the first automotive repair shops in Canada.
Starting in March, the auto repair outlets are located in the core downtown and downtown core areas, along with several new retail spaces that will open in the coming months.
“Our goal is to open as many shops as we can to meet the needs of the community,” says David Gorman, CEO of the Toronto Auto Repair Association.
“This is an exciting step forward in the effort to support the City’s efforts to improve safety and to ensure our communities are able to get to work in a safe and reliable environment.”
The stores will be located in various downtown locations, including the Eaton Centre, Bathurst Street, Bay and Bay stations, and along the newly expanded Harbourfront.
“The new locations will enable us to provide a range of services and products to our customers,” said Gorman.
“We’ll have a mix of the types of products that people use today, the types that we will need in the future, and the types they may need in their cars as well.”
The City of Ontario is launching an ambitious program to help repair vehicles, including making the repairs at home.
The initiative, known as ‘Toronto Auto Repair Plus’, will see vehicles equipped with new, high-tech systems installed in all of Toronto’s new car-centric shops, to be available for repair in the city’s downtown core.
“Toronto Auto repair Plus is an innovative program that provides our customers with the tools to help them safely repair their vehicles,” said City of London Mayor Joe Fontana.
“This innovative program has been designed to meet and exceed the needs and requirements of Toronto residents who want to be safe and dependable in their vehicles.”
“The City is proud to be home to some of the best auto repair and servicing facilities in the world and to be a leader in this effort,” said Mark Pasternak, President of the Ontario Auto Dealers Association.
“Our members and the thousands of dealers and consumers who come to Toronto for auto repairs have the confidence that we have the tools and the expertise to meet their automotive needs.”
The Toronto Auto Dealership Association will be leading the program, which is set to be launched in 2019.
“We’re really proud to have been chosen by the City to lead this initiative,” said Jim Matson, president of the Matson Auto Repair and Maintenance Association.
The association represents over 40,000 auto repair technicians across Ontario and the world.
“Today’s announcement marks a significant step forward for the City, which has long sought to help its citizens, and for our industry,” said Matson.
“We’re thrilled to be able to contribute to this important initiative and hope this initiative will be a stepping stone to more safe and sustainable auto repair.”
